About the Journal

Focus and Scope

Berceo, published by the Instituto de Estudios Riojanos, publishes scholarly studies in the fields of Social Sciences, Philology, History, and Regional Heritage, with the aim of contributing relevant knowledge to research and to the cultural development of La Rioja.

These works are intended for the scholarly community, as well as for other readers interested in these subject areas at the regional, national, and international levels.

The aim of the journal is to promote the understanding, preservation, and enhancement of the Riojan context, while also providing a forum for the dissemination of works developed at national and international level that offer useful advances for this region.

Publication Frequency

The journal is published biannually, with a frequency of two issues per year.

Languages

The main language of the journal is Spanish, although submissions in English are also accepted. The abstract must always be provided in both languages.

Code of Ethics

Berceo adheres to the Code of Conduct and Best Practice Guidelines for Journal Editors of the Committee on Publication Ethics (COPE), which entails compliance with international standards of ethics, impartiality, integrity, and editorial responsibility.

In research involving clinical or sensitive information, the anonymization of personal data must be guaranteed, and the corresponding authorization and ethical approval statement must be provided.

Anti-Plagiarism Policy

Submission of a manuscript implies that:

  • it has not been previously published;
  • it is not under review by another journal;
  • it will not be published in duplicate without the express authorization of the IER.

The journal verifies originality using Crossref Similarity Check or other similarity-detection systems.

Peer Review System

The journal Berceo applies a double-blind peer review system. The identities of both authors and reviewers are kept confidential throughout the review process in order to ensure an objective evaluation based exclusively on the scientific quality of the manuscripts.

Open Access Policy

This journal provides immediate open access to its content, based on the principle that making research freely available to the public supports a greater global exchange of knowledge.

Retrospective articles are published in open access through Dialnet, ensuring free and full access to all content.

Copyright and Licensing

Authors who publish in Berceo retain the copyright of their works and authorize the journal to make the first publication of them.

Articles are published under the Creative Commons Attribution–NonCommercial–ShareAlike License (CC BY-NC-SA), which permits their use, distribution, and reproduction in any medium, provided that the original authorship is properly cited, no commercial use is made, and the same license is maintained.

Policy on the Use of Artificial Intelligence (AI)

The journal requires authors to explicitly declare any use of generative AI, using the following format at the end of the manuscript:

“Declaration on the use of generative AI and AI-assisted technologies in the writing process”, indicating the tool used, the purpose of its use, and confirmation that the content has been reviewed by a human.

It is not mandatory to declare the use of basic spelling, grammar, or style correction tools.

Fees Policy

No fees are charged.

Editorial Practices on Gender Equality

The journal promotes inclusive and non-discriminatory language. Authors should avoid:

  • sexist, ethnocentric, or exclusionary expressions;
  • stereotypes and assumptions based on gender, age, origin, or ability.

Authors are also encouraged to integrate sex- and gender-based analysis (SGBA) when required by the nature of the study.

Funding and Acknowledgement Policies

Authors must:

  • clearly identify all sources of funding;
  • explain the role of the funder, where applicable;
  • include acknowledgements in a separate section before the references.

Authorship and Contribution Policy

The journal promotes transparency in authorship, in alignment with the CRediT taxonomy, which establishes 14 roles describing the actual contribution of each author, such as conceptualization, methodology, formal analysis, data curation, writing, supervision, and others.

Each author must indicate the roles they have performed in the study.

Changes in authorship are accepted only before manuscript acceptance and must have the written approval of all authors.

Research Data Policy

The journal requires the submission of all underlying data used in figures, tables, or analyses.

Data may be included as supplementary material or provided through a link to an official repository.

Authors are encouraged to include a Data Availability section before the references, indicating the repository and URL.

Interoperability Protocols

The journal Berceo provides an OAI-PMH interfaceOpen Archives Initiative Protocol for Metadata Harvesting — which enables other portals and information services to access the metadata of the published content.
