The “Good Society”. Distinction and heritage in an association of provinces. The Círculo Logroñés

Abstract

This article describes the recreation society “Círculo Logroñés” from a cultural perspective strongly influenced by the theoretical approaches, the practical results of Cultural History and the reflections of the French sociologist Pierre Bourdieu. This article outlines and explains the “good society” to which the members of the “Círculo Logroñés” belonged. It also includes the most relevant elements of its tangible and intangible heritage, it shows the distinction of its members and the classification (classement) that arose among them, and describes the role assigned to women in this recreation society. All these features would shape the bourgeois habitus that was transmitted from generation to generation among the members of the bourgeois and aristocratic society of the second half of the nineteenth century and the first third of the twentieth century.
