Introduction and objectives: We suggest the inclusion of thickened placental ultrasound appearance in the management of patients with earlyonset intrauterine growth restriction due to placental cause.
Methods: Presentation of clinical cases and bibliographic argumentation.
Results: We present three cases of early-onset intrauterine growth restriction due to placental cause, with abnormal ultrasound placental appearance (thick-looking placenta, with radial distribution echoes or
“glassy aspect”), associated with placental abruption and / or third trimester metrorrhagia. In one of the cases, the placental detachment happened at home, resulting in perinatal loss. In the other two cases the patients were hospitalized at the time of the placental abruption, as a resulto two viable newborns were delivered.
Conclusions: In cases where this placental ultrasound pattern is appreciated, we propose a closer monitoring or hospital admission, given the higher probability of an adverse perinatal outcome that cannot be avoided or prevented, such as the placental abruption.
