Abstract

In March of 2020 the WHO officially declared the COVID Pandemic of SARS-CoV-2. Shortly after, we knew that there was going to be a great problem in nursing homes because this population was one of the most affected in both terms of cases and of deaths. In La Rioja two specialised teams were created in order to support the medical staff in the region’s nursing homes. These  teams were made up of a Geriatrician and a nurse. This support was based both on phone contact and face to face meetings. These teams were helping to manage cases, make
decisions, to facilitate the supply of oxygen devices and hospital drugs, and the sectoring inside the nursing homes, depending on the risk category of the residents. In this report we refer to the results of cases, the need for hospital attendance and deaths in this group of people during the first wave of the Pandemic in La Rioja. The COVID pandemic has shown some attendance problems and weaknesses in the nursing home system. It is time to change.
