Since the announcement on December 31, 2019 by the World Health Organization (WHO) of the appearance of a cluster of pneumonia cases of unknown origin in the city of Wuhan (China), the new SARS-CoV-2 coronavirus has spread worldwide and has caused the deadliest pandemic of
the 21st century, reaching more than 155 million infected and more than 3 million deaths worldwide by early May 2021 (Center for Systems Science and Engineering, Johns Hopkins University). This article will summarize the most relevant immunological aspects of this pandemic and how this knowledge, together with many others accumulated over decades, has been decisive in the development of several extremely safe and effective vaccines with an unprecedented speed in history (Table 1).
